Wow! He’s turned out to be some kind of monster. I’m not sure how well I like the horns on the arms, but they certainly bulk out the miniature and enhance its stature. I have just undercoated him, so I’ll reserve judgement until I apply some paint. I much prefer painting to assembling, so I’m glad that stage is finished!
Here’s a step-by-step video guide to painting the Executioner. I only had two hours to paint him, so I had to rush slightly. I think he’s turned out pretty well and will fit in with the aesthetic of the Lady Justice crew.
I have a 30 soul stone game on Tuesday, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this guy performs.
We’ve been treated to some Privateer treats with the previewing of the Shae and Fiona Tiers. Bell of Lost Souls have also previewed the Fiona the Black Tiers here. I haven’t painted Fiona yet, but I’ll have a look at this Tier too. I have a good few more Pirates to paint and painting them as Thamarite cultists would be a nice change of pace.
The Shae Tiers are in No Quarter #30 and have already been implemented on the Forward Kommander Army Builder. Here’s a quick 35pt list I put together -
Captain Phinneus Shae
Mariner
Commodore Cannon & Crew (Commodore and 3 Crewmen)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Press Gangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Sea Dog Crew (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Mr. Walls Sea Dog Crew Quartermaster
3 Sea Dog Crew Riflemen
Bosun Grogspar
Dirty Meg
Buccaneer
Doc Killingsworth
First Mate Hawk
Lord Rockbottom
This is a Tier 3 list. I get all of the solos I want at a bargain basement points cost. My army will be lightning fast in the first turn game and I get a better chance of winning the starting roll. Sweet!
More progress. It seems to be coming together quite nicely. It’s starting to look very insect like, but it is definitely Cryxian in origin. The only thing I’m concerned with finishing off is the top part of the chassis. I’m sure I’ll figure something out! Anyway, here’s a short video update.
If you’re not familiar with the German army from WWII that title probably makes no sense (unless you speak German)! I’ll explain what’s what as I go.
With the addition of these platoons my German army is starting to get quite large. I can now field a full company of Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers (armoured, mounted grenadiers)! These Panzergrenadiers are transported to battle by their (lightly) armoured and MG armed 250s. I’ve written a painting guide for these before, so I won’t bore you by repeating it here.
I’ve also added three more Nebelwerfers (rocket launchers) to the three I already have. These Nebelwerfers, literally translated as Fog Thrower for the amount of smoke they produced upon firing, are 15cm rocket launchers.
Last up, two StuG Gs (assault guns) from the Open Fire! boxed set. The Sturmgeschütz III was Germany’s most produced armoured fighting vehicle in WWII. The G variant was armed with an MG as well as a pretty impressive 7.5cm gun.
I’ve a platoon of heavy mortars to do next and then some artillery pieces. I think that’ll round out the army nicely.
In my last post I showed a jumble of bits and a beaufitul piece of artwork. Yesterday I got started to turn that mess into something. Hopefully that something will look a little like the picture when it’s done! Anyway, here’s a video of progress so far.
I think Privateer Press have some of the best sculpts of any wargames company. Deathjack, however, is not one of them – I really don’t like the shoulder skulls or the horns on the head. Of course that’s just my opinion, but I dislike the model so much I’ve not bought it and subsequently never fielded it. I’ve had an old Slayer Helljack model sitting unassembled for a number of years and the idea struck me – why don’t I convert up my own Deathjack! So, that’s pretty easy to say, but what do I know about miniature design. Nothing to tell you the truth.
I decided to do a little Internet searching and I stumbled on this picture (click on the picture for *FSitz’s Deviant Art page) -
Wow! was my first reaction. I thought this beast looked more like a Deathjack, but how could I build such a thing. I raided my bits box and came back with these pieces -
I’m going to increase the miniatures height with the pieces in the middle and broaden the shoulders to make it more imposing. The oversized horns will either look comical or work. Until I start pinning and sticking pieces together it’s hard to know what it will look like. I’d like a more dynamic pose so I’m going to try to position the helljack so it looks like it is just about to leap from a pile of rocks -
I’ve no idea how it’ll turn out. Next step is to clean off all of the components and slowly begin assembling the different parts. This could end up looking like a pile of junk, but then I’ve done no worse than buying the official Deathjack!
I’ve been interested in Operation Market Garden for a long time and the release of Hell’s Highway and A Bridge Too Far gave me a push to paint up some more Sherman tanks to support my US Paratroopers. Saying the tanks are painted as Irish Guards is a bit of an untruth. I’ve not painted on Guards or squadron markings as I’ll probably reuse the tanks in different situations.
Anyway, they’re very easy to paint – I sprayed them with Army Painter Green, base coated them in Vallejo Russian Uniform, highlighted with a small amount of Bleached Bone added, painted the tracks with Boltgun Metal, and then picked out the other details with browns and beiges. I used Army Painters Dark Shade as a paint on dip, applied the decals and then sprayed them with the Army Painter Matt Varnish spray. That sounds like a lot of work, but when you’re painting 6 tanks at once you fly through the steps. Here’s a close up –
I’ll consider weathering them at some stage, but will probably wait until I have a larger force. Between them, my older Shermans and some US Paratroopers I can field a small Irish Guards army. My intention is probably to us a Paratrooper army with Guards support.
I’ve also been adding to my Late War German army. More on that later.
I’m trying not to get totally sidetracked by other projects, but in the last while terrain, Malifaux, Epic Armageddon and Flames of War have all distracted my from painting my Privateers. I’ve had a unit of Press Gangers and Dirty Meg on the go for a couple of months, but they kept getting bumped by the other projects. Anyway, excuses, excuses! Here’s Dirty Meg finished -
She’s a pretty easy minature to paint. I started with the flesh – Tallaran Flesh, two watered down Ogryn Flesh washes and then added progressive amounts of Elf Flesh to Tallaran Flesh. Next up I painted the apron and blouse with Khemri Brown. I lightened the apron with Snakebite Leather and then added Bleached Bone for a highlight. The blouse is Bleached Bone over the brown and then highlights with progressive amounts of Skull White added. Her trousers were based Shadow Grey and I added Space Wolves Grey for the highlights. They were washed with Asurmen Blue. Her hair is Snakebite Leather mixed with Khador Red Highlight (an orange colour). They’re all of the main colours. Everything (apart form the trousers) received a 1:1:1 wash of water, Devlan Mud and Badab Black. It makes her look appropriately grimy.
I now have a 35pt force painted. I’d rather not field this many solos at 35pts, but until the Press Gangers are completed this is the only fully painted Talion Charter force I can field at this size.
