This turned out to be a bigger painting job than expected. Because I bought a few of the miniatures already (excellently) painted I had a standard to aim for. My painting has been getting better over time, but this project really pushed me. I’ve spent significantly longer on each miniature than I have with previous armies. There are two reasons for that – the first is that I wanted to achieve a better standard and that takes time, and the second is that the pirates are all individuals. It’s hard to production line paint them like a standard unit. That said, I now have a beautifully painted army, so, no complaints! So, that’s it, my MkII project is complete (apart from maybe a ‘jack or two!).

I’ve just finished photographing the whole army, so I’ll post them later this week.

When placed side by side with Aiyana the bases line up and they look like a mini diorama.

Lady Aiyana is also on the painting table. I’ve started her by doing colours that match Holt at the same time as I was painting them on him, but I’ll wait until he’s finished before I tackle the rest.

I need to think about some rust wear too. This guy is a tester for the Mariner, so if he turns out well the heavy will be painted in a similar manner.

I picked up my copy of the new edition of Space Hulk on Friday. I have the original game and both expansions, but as soon as its release date was confirmed I put in my pre-order with my FLGS. It is an excellent game with an amazing sense of tension. I played a demo game on Friday of the first ‘Suicide Mission’, which is lifted directly from the original. I somehow managed to complete the mission and have all five terminators alive at the end!

Anyway, I started painting the Blood Angel Space Marine Terminators last night. I’ll post a painting guide when I’m finished, but here is the work done so far.

I have the metallics and the bases left to do, which will take a while as there is a lot of metal to do. Painting these miniatures has reminded me why I never got into Warhammer 40k (despite playing Epic, Inquisitor and BFG!). All the extraneous Gothic detailing on the armour pisses me off! Don’t get me wrong, these are the best plastics I have ever seen, but there is too much fiddly detail to paint. That’s got more to do with the 40k fluff than the sculpting. The terminators are walking shrines, relics of everything their chapter has achieved. I get it, but I don’t like the Gothic aesthetic and its associated clutter.

I will persevere. Space Hulk is such a great game that it deserves to be fully painted and with these six finished (soon) I’ll have half of the marines painted.

This is the last of the three Great Bears finished (apart from basing which I’ll get to). He is the leader and is named Volkov. I finished Kolsk and Yarovich over the last few evenings. Here are all three from the unit -

 jQuery("#gallery-9c59992b .flickr-thumb img").flightbox({size_callback: get_sizes});
 });

 //-->

Once they are based I’ll write a quick painting guide.

In case you are wondering, he is blu-taked to the top of an old GW ink bottle with some water in it. I find it’s a nice weight and easy to manipulate when painting character miniatures. I’m not so careful with rank and file!
