I will be running a 35 Point Warmachine/Hordes Tournament on Saturday, 10th December in Gamer’s World Dublin. Full details are:

What: Steamroller 2012 Beta Tournament
Where: Gamers World, Dublin
Date & Time: 10/12/2011. 11am hard start, registration begins at 10:15 AM.
Entry Fee: €10.
Points: 35 points, two lists (optional). Lists must be written. If taking a theme force, players are required to bring a copy of the theme rules. Note: Reinforcements will not be used in this tournament.
Restrictions: Models or Units with FA:C cannot be in both lists. For the purpose of regular versus epics, epic models are considered to be different characters than their regular versions.
Timing: 10 minute timed turns (standard for 35pts is 7 minute timed turns, but I’m relaxing it for this one)
Tie-breakers: For the tournament, if there is no outright winner, Control Points will be tiebreaker. Second tiebreaker will be Army Points.
Scenarios:“Gauntlet”, “Destruction”, “Outflank, Outfight, Outlast”, “A Flag Too Far”, “Restoration”, “Command and Control”. The scenario for each round will be randomly chosen from the list above. Each scenario may only be used once. NOTE: The ‘Reinforcements’ artifice will not be used.

Prizes will include best general, 2nd place and a few spot prizes.

See you all there.

Running the tournament yesterday was a pleasure – 16 enthusiastic and skilled players turned up and played four very competitive games each. Every game was played in a spirit of camaraderie and any questions I had to answer were genuine rules queries – the players made my job easy. I first advertised the tournament about a month in advance and it was great to see such a good turn out.
The players began appearing at around 10:15 at Gamers World and Stuart, another of our local PGs, was good enough to help me get terrain sorted while I registered players and checked lists. As far as factions go we had 4 Cygnar, 2 Cryx, 2 Trollbloods, 2 Mercs, and then 1 of Skorne, Legion of Everblight, Circle Orboros, Retribution of Scyrah, Protectorate of Menoth and Khador. My friend Phil (from the Subject to Stupidity blog) flew in from Hamburg the day before and used my Khador, rocking a Karchev list in all four rounds.

The first round kicked off just after 11am. I printed five different Steamroller scenarios and randomly chose one for each round. I rolled high for the random element of the round time and let the players know that the clock was running. About this time last year Stuart bought a load of cheap timers from eBay and we use them to track turn times. One or two of the games that round ran long (as people took time to get all of their armies sorted), but none reached the time limit. As the results trickled in I entered them into the (excellent) Dohyou software. It really made my job easy.

And so each round went. As there were 16 players we needed 4 games to sort things out and by 5pm (or so) we had a result (I run a tight ship). I had prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, fully painted (randomly chosen) and also for last position. I decided to go with Minions and Mercenary blisters as the prizes.

Gerry scooped Calaban and a Minions token set as the top prize. He used Rhyas in every game and showed all of his opponents just how competitive she can be! He’s a great guy to play against and is a great example of how the game should be played. Jason and his beautifully painted Cryx picked up second place of Aiyana and Holt and Gorman de Wolfe (as well as the randomly assigned painting prize – 2 speciality brushes). Robbie picked up third and the Piper of Menoth! (I’m sure he has uses for Cygnar too). Conor came in last place and was a little unlucky having fought some tight games. Everyone who played him agreed he was a great opponent too, effectively making his prize of Eiryss a prize for sportsmanship!

Thanks again to everyone for making it such a good day.

Last weekend Stu organised a 35pt Steamroller tournament in Gamers World (Dublin). It was well attended with 16 players and a good spread of factions. Below is the defining moment of the tournament for me. It was in the final game, Tomek’s beautiful pGaspy army clashed with my Strakhov led force and both armies were whittled down with a lot of aggressive play. I saw the chance for the assassination run, so I used Aiyana’s Lurynsar’s Touch on Asphyxious, tried to drop a Black Oil grenade on him from Gorman (which missed) and then went for it with a fully loaded Strakhov. I connected with the charge (after boosting the hit), then hit again, and again and finally missing a last boosted attack (I needed 8). After all of that Asphyxious was left on 1 point of damage. We called the game there. Later that night I remembered Strakhov has Brutal Charge (+2 Damage on charge attack) – oh well, I should know my own model’s rules. It was a fun and tight game regardless.

Game 1 – Retribution (Christoph)

This game was a big loss for me. It was the Revelation scenario and I kept my force slightly right, but the rightmost flag disappeared. I caused a lot of damage to Christoph’s Rahn led force, but I completely failed to challenge for the scenario. He nearly assassinated me too! It was a good game, but I didn’t play well.

Game 2 – Legion of Everblight (Stu/Bye)

I played the TO as this was a bye round for me. I used Karchev as Stu had a Tier 4 Absylonia list. It was a fun game, but the super Angelius was nigh unstoppable. It assassinated Karchev after dancing around my army. The game was great fun and was everything Warmachine and Hordes should be – big machines clashing with large beasts. Stu’s heading over to Gencon so he’s offered to do some ninja shopping for me – woot!

Game 3 – Trollbloods (Jason)

This game was a good example for why you should play scenarios when practicing. It was the Sacrifice scenario, but to date Jason had only been playing ‘caster kills. I went full tilt for the scenario as I had a Devastator who could be ‘sacrificed’ – you got to love ARM 25! Gunnbjorn (proxied) and his ranged-centric list never really got into the game as Occultation on Strakhov spoiled their fun. I won on scenario.

Game 4 – Cryx (Tomek)

Between the bye and the win I was right back in the hunt for a place, but as you can see from above things didn’t go to plan. Tomek won the game and claimed 2nd place.

It was another fun day. I’m glad I didn’t bring Harkevich. I need more practice to figure out what army (if any) works best with him.

Yesterday Stu, one of our local Press Gangers, ran a 35pt two list Steamroller 2011 tournament held in Gamers World, Dublin. The tournament attracted 11 players and I went along with my Legion of Everblight. Saeryn led one list and Thagrosh the other, though I only really had practice with the Saeryn army. Here’s a quick run down of the tournament.

Game 1 – Skorne (Harry)

Harry lives in the same town as me, so we get to play quite a bit and one of the practice games I had in the lead up to the tournament was against him. We played the ‘Process of Elimination’ scenario. Harry used pMakeda and opted for my Saeryn list. I played much more aggressively than I had in our practice games, but resisted the temptation to kill any of Harry’s infantry on his feat turn (I’ve learned that lesson!). I used the Warmongers and Gobbers to screen Saeryn and pushed the beasts forward as a feat-protected meat shield to hold most of Harry’s force in place. This really put Harry on the back foot and once I’d taken out one of his two heavies things didn’t look good for him. I managed to get the warlock kill and secure my second Control Point in my final turn. It was a good game, but Harry’s dice luck was atrocious (again!).

Game 2 – Protectorate of Menoth (Pádraic)

I think the picture tells the story of this game. Pádraic had a by in the first round and brought pKreoss. I opted for my Thagrosh list, which was a mistake as I had no practice with it. Anyway, he pushed a full unit of Zealots under Greater Destiny up into my half of the board and then proceeded to ‘Pop and Drop’ Thagrosh with lots of fire bombs. Ouch! The less said about that the better. It did mean we could break early for lunch and found a really nice Chinese restaurant nearby!

Game 3 – Skorne (Spencer)

I’ve only played Spencer a couple of times before and like all of the other guys I played he’s a great opponent. I’ve fought his Cygnar before, but this was the first time playing against his Skorne. He had pMorghoul and the Molik Karn bullet. Learning from my mistake of the last game I went back to my Saeryn list. The scenario was ‘Capture the Flag’, but I really didn’t fancy having to get through the whole Skorne army to get near my flag. I feinted to the right to make it look like I was making a play for the flag and then swung back to protect my flag, making the Skorne come to me. Molik charged from an impossible distance to kill my Angelius, only for me to Respawn it! Spencer didn’t realise Respawn was within 3″. The Angelius tore Molik apart in retaliation. On my left Spencer’s Totem Hunter systematically tore through my Warmongers, killing each and every one during the game. In turn 3 I saw an opportunity to seize a Control Point with the Angelius and went for it. It ran forward and I cast Blight Bringer onto it to clear the infantry (Paingivers) around the flag. Morghoul finished off the Angelius and then sprinted into a location near Saeryn. Saeryn chucked a Thrown Spur at him for 11 damage (which couldn’t be transferred due to Grievous Wounds). The Ravagore finished things off (in Melee!). That was probably the closest fought of my games.

In the end I picked up second place (on strength of schedule) and Kommander Harkevich as a prize. Ciaran (another local PG) took the win and Anthony (another regular opponent) came third. I really enjoy the SR2011 format and Warmachine/Hordes lends itself to competitive play as the rules are very tight. Big thanks to Stu for running such an excellent tournament (despite his laptop crashing half way through!). Fun way to spend Father’s Day…

I played in a 25pt Warmachine/Hordes Journeyman tournament yesterday and I had a blast! It was run as part of Leprecon, hosted by the TCD Gamers and run by Stu and Ciaran (who did an excellent job). I lost three of the four games and it was still fun. Here’s a quick review of the games -

Game 1

I faced Aaron and his eFeora list. I brought my Irusk list, but I played very poorly. Of the four games I played this was the one I enjoyed the least. Aaron was a sloppy player – he took liberties when measuring and called incorrect dice scores more than once. Warmachine is a thoroughly competitive game, but those felt like 40k shenanigans. That said, I would have lost either way. The list he used was very tough (eFeora, three heavies, choir, vassal, book) and he played it well. He won the game on scenario.

Game 2

This game was a lot more fun, though I nearly lost it at the top of Round 2! John, my opponent, had the Coven, Deathjack, a Defiler, Gorman and a load of Satyxis. I’ve never played the Coven before and naively decided to put Occultation onto the Great Bears. When he nearly assassinated Strakhov through the arc node I realised my mistake! I managed to claw my way back a little by taking out Deathjack and the bonejack, but the Satyxis managed to get some feedback hits onto Beast-09 and that was game over.

Game 3

This game was a blast! I played David’s eHaley list and we had some fun. To start off my Great Bears wrecked his Lancer and I held Beast-09 back at what I thought was a safe distance. I was amazed at the speed of his when it charged my character ‘jack and totalled him. My IFP ran to engage the Black 13th and the Great Bears began to mow through the Stormblades. I used Overrun to position the Marauder for a slam on the Stormclad. I needed 6 on 3D6. I rolled 5… Doh! This left David with a vector on Strakhov. He used Telekinesis to move the Marauder out of the way and again to move the Stormclad a little closer. He charged Strakhov and one shotted him. Ouch! It was a great game though.

Game 4

I was up against Cygnar again. Ivan, my opponent, described the army as the “dregs of David’s army”. He hadn’t brought his army as he thought there was a fully painted requirement, so he borrowed some of my previous opponents models. As a second choice army, though, it wasn’t bad. His army comprised pStryker, a Cyclone, a Hunter, Journeyman, Long Gunners and Precursor Knights. This game was drawn out because of the scenario (Destruction). I managed to take out one of the objectives with Beast-09 after it whiffed a charge attack on the Hunter. The second attack was enough to take out its gun, so that was good enough. I took out most of the Knights and Gunners, but it cost me the Great Bears. I had a chance to finish the game, but Strakhov missed a charge attack against a Long Gunner and failed to activate Overrun. If he had Beast-09 would have been into the second objective and fully loaded with focus. As it was time was called and as I had destroyed an objective I got my one win of the day. It’s a daft scenario and it’s a stupid way to win a game!

I might put in a bit of practice before my next tournament, but with losing being so much fun maybe I won’t.

I’ve played in lots of tournaments, mostly Warhammer, but also Warmachine and Hordes. It’s easy to forget something vital when packing up for a tournament, so here are my check lists.

Here’s my Warhammer tournament check list -

1. Army (Miniatures, Movement Trays)
2. Dice (D6s, Scatter, Artillery, Turn Counter)
3. Templates (Flame and two Artillery)
4. Measuring Tape (or two)
5. Army list (At least two copies, but I prefer four; one per game and one for organisers)
6. Rulebooks and Paperwork (Army Book, Rulebook, Rulepack and Ticket)
7. Army Case (Case, foam trays and covers)
8. Tray (for moving the army between games)
9. Pen/Pencil and Spare Paper
10. Super Glue
11. Special Army Counters (e.g. Wood Elves Forest, Spell Markers, Tunnelling Team Markers, etc.)
12. Calculator

For Warmachine and Hordes I add the following -

13. Unit cards and card sleeves
14. Drywipe pen
15. Focus and Fury counters

I also bring paracetamol and loads of water as they are long intense days, so some emergency supplies may be needed!
