I’m looking forward to game two of this mini campaign. The last game was somewhat of a stalemate with the Germans slowly pushing the American paratroopers back towards Bizory. That game was set on the evening of the 20th December 1944. This game is set at daybreak early on the following day.

TERRAIN
This scenario uses the Fighting Winter Battles rules (P.244 of Hardback Rulebook). It should have several forested areas (at least in the defenders deployment area) and some snow drifts/muddy areas with roads running through. Some buildings on the edge of Bizory (along the Bizory-Foy road) should also be included.

SCENARIO
This scenario is based on Hasty Assault (P.18 of Das Book) with one additional Mission Special Rule: Dawn Attack (P.7 of Das Book). The American player is automatically the defender.

I’ll play this on Monday and do a Battle Report at some stage during the week.

Some games revolve around a single dice role. This was one of those games. After writing this scenario I stumbled upon an excellent blog post about the fighting of the Second Battalion 501st PIR at Bizory, Belgium in December 1944 and January 1945. I decided to base the game on the events of the 20th December 1944 when a mechanised German force, supported by heavy armour, smashed into the defenders of Fox company. The map below is from that blogpost and it shows an area to the east of Bastogne.

As you can see Fox Company was positioned just north of Bizory and suffered the brunt of the German assault. In ou 1250pt game I commanded the US Paratrooper force that was made up of three plattons of Paratroopers and a single platoon of PIR Engineers. Pádraic’s had a Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier force with two mechanised platoons supported by three Panzer IV Hs and three StUGs. As we were playing the No Retreat mission I had to keep two platoons in reserve and one in ambush, meaning I started the game with just one platoon on the board. The German’s had the benefit of a Preliminary Bombardment (which effects platoons on the board and those in ambush), but was mostly ineffective.

Once the artillery died down the sound of German engines could be heard approaching from the east. Above is the sight my sole platoon had as the remained in a copse of wood protecting an objective. The German vehicles were hampered slightly by the snowy conditions and the poor light, but they trundled forward at a steady pace. I sprung my ambush of PIR Engineers on the right flank, inflicting significant damage to one of the Grenadier platoons, but ultimately the ambushers fled back to the edge of Bizory (depicted by a few buildings and a small intersection in the road).

Quite quickly my Paratroopers in the wood (augmented with the Company Commander, 2iC and two additional bazookas) were facing the bulk of the German force. The all attacked and initially pushed the Paratroopers back out of the wood. On the right the under strength Grenadiers kept pushing towards the Engineers, ultimately wiping them out and taking up position on the edge of the town.

The counter attack around the objective was quite successful, destroying three Panzers and killing one or two Grenadier teams. Their success was short lived and the platoon fled as the Germans pressed their assault. The sole survivor did manage to evade the pursuing enemy.

With both forces down a platoon one of my reserve PIR platoons moved to assault the Grenadiers (and Company Commander) who had occupied the edge of town. The German’s hit them with a withering hail of fire, but failed to halt the assault. The PIR proved too strong for their enemy and destroyed them.

As Pádraic would start this turn in possession of an objective all he had to do was pass that Company Morale check. This tight game was going to come down to whether he could roll 4+ on a D6. He rolled six and the Germans won the encounter. At this point in the game we had forgotten an important rule – forces that have their Company Commander destroyed can’t pass a Company Morale check. Doesn’t really matter as it was an excellent game. I seem to enjoy Flames of War whether I win or lose!

Until next time,

General Bradley welcomed the idea of a German counterattack as an opportunity to deal a severe blow their ability to defend their homeland. In December 1944 Hitler launched his last offensive, but it was more than Bradley or anyone else expected. Four German armies converged on the densely wooded Ardennes, which at the time only had four American divisions stationed there. Control of the roads was going to crucial to effectively move through this area. As a significant crossroads, the previously unheard of town of Bastogne became the centre of military and media attention. Eisenhower rushed the under strength XVIII Corp, including the 101st and 82nd to the area.

This scenario is set on the evening of the 20th December 1944 when the Panzer Lehr infantry supported by Panthers clashed with the 501st east of Bastogne between Mont and Bizory. The Germans bombarded the entire length of the 501st line before the assault began at 19:00.

TERRAIN
This scenario uses the Fighting Winter Battles rules (P.244 of Hardback Rulebook). It should have several forested areas (at least in the defenders deployment area) and some snow drifts/muddy areas with roads running through.

SCENARIO
This scenario is based on No Retreat (P.13 of Das Book) with two additional Mission Special Rules: Night Fighting Rules (P.7 of Das Book) and Preliminary Bombardment (P.218 of Hardback Rulebook). The American player is automatically the defender.

I’ll play this on Tuesday and do a Battle Report.

Kallus had flawless eyesight. He was sure he was the first of his army to spot the mechanika abominations across the other side of the burning village. Even the eyeless beasts under his command had not perceived the rapid advance of the Cryxian helljacks yet. Kallus had not spotted what was commanding them, but there were few of the undead elite capable of effectively control so many ‘jacks. He counted at least four heavies and three light ‘jacks. He would need to show control his own beasts and troops as forcefully if he was to win the day.

The pace of the helljacks was stunning. The legend that is Deathjack slammed into a Nephilim Soldier he sent forward to intercept it. The beast was devoured body and soul, fueling Deathjack’s seemingly boundless rage. Kallus commanded the Warmongers and his Carnivean to shore up the right flank. A Harrower hurtled into a group of Legionnaires on his left and carved through four of them before he even had a chance to react. He focussed everything on the left flank to destroying it. As he did Deathjack plowed forward into the Ravagore. It smashed aside several Legionnaires along its path, Incubi instantly exploding from their flesh. The abomination struck home with unerring accuracy, but failed to fell the beast. Kallus again had to focus all of his energies on his left flank if it wasn’t going to falter. He commanded everything he had to attack Deathjack, bolstered his own power and charged into the fray. Deathjack seemed to phase between the real world and some other plane. Several of Kallus’ blows failed to meet his target. Things were not faring much better on the right. He was struggling to control the Carnivean and the Warmonger numbers had been depleted.

Deathjack was quick to retaliate, striking down the Ravagore, a Foresaken and a Shredder in a whirlwind of violence. Kallus redoubled his efforts as his army began to dwindle. He swung again and again at Deathjack and a Slayer which had arrived. Again he failed to connect with his targets. The combined blows of Deathjack and the Slayer wore him down, until his armour failed, he fell to the ground and the world went black.

This was a fun game, but I barely got into the fight. I overstretched on my right flank and my dice failed on the left flank. That said Peter played well and got several ‘jacks on top of my army early. Had I been able to connect with Deathjack and deal even semi-respectable damage I may have been in with a chance, but it wasn’t to be. That said, one of my Warmongers on the right flank managed to charge Mortenebra reducing her to just three boxes. The Deathstalker had just missed her too, so a flukey win could have been mine! Peter suggested I write this battle report as -

Today I hid behind a shed for ages until I got bored and decided to try hitting Deathjack. That didn’t go too well and a Slayer snuck up destroyed my shell. Could’ve been worse though, at least I didn’t get corroded to death like that Ogryn!

Until next time,

Owen

I really enjoyed working on this model. I first came up with the idea around the time of GenCon 2011 when Wyrd had their online sale (I picked up the alternative sculpt of Lady Justice and the Dead Justice crew). I’m really happy with how it turned out. The base was pretty easy to build and the simple conversion work on Lady J. came together well. Thankfully I can just about sculpt a bit of hair with green stuff! Anyway, here is a video and a few photos -

I love the painting element of this hobby and the idea of buying models that have already been painting generally doesn’t appeal to me. My FLGS (Gamers World) buys and sells second-hand models and recently there was some German WWII pieces. They were painted in DAK colours, but the paint job (certainly the uniforms) was pretty close to my own scheme, so I decided to pick them up. There were four 10.5cm guns and two 88s on scenic bases. I got them for €15 which was a very good deal.

When I got home I touched up the paint on the models, by changing the helmet colour, washing the sandbags and changing the base colours. They are now ready to add some much needed artillery support to my German forces. A quick blast of matt spray and they’ll be perfect.

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2012 brings you joy and peace. I’ve had another good year on the blog. Not bad considering little Ciarán arrived in May!

My main focus in 2011 was campaign play and I see that continuing in 2011. I’ve played campaigns in Warmachine, Horde and Flames of War. I’ve also done quite a bit of painting this year. Here are a few samples -

I didn’t make that much terrain last year. I made the Jailhouse, some Fences and some fortifications for Flames of War. I’d like to improve on that for next year.

I also did the Wargames Audit which was a great exercise. On the back of it I am determined to concentrate on my three core games of Warmachine/Hordes, Flames of War and Malifaux in 2012. I don’t see myself starting any new armies other than adding to my US WWII army. I have good faction coverage in Warmachine (Khador, Mercs and Cryx) and Hordes (Legion) and until I get more games of Malifaux played there is no point adding more models. I have the Puppet Wars models and the Dead Justice crew to paint anyway. My painting list is under control and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made.

In 2012 I’m looking forward to extending the Malifaux VASSAL module and getting more Malifaux played. I’d also like to run a Flames of War campaign based on some of the fighting in the Hürtgen Forest. I’m going to focus my Press Ganger activity on a new store that opened in my home town recently. I think the IK RPG may pique my interest in 2011 too, but I’m not really a roleplayer!

Happy New Year,

Owen

If there was one word to describe tonight’s game it would be ‘attrition’! When the dust settled there was very little left standing on either side. Anthony used a pretty competitive Scaverous list that included a Skarlock, Malice, two Ripjaws, two Warwitch Sirens, two Pistol Wraiths, a min unit of Bile Thralls, a full unit (plus UA) of Bane Thralls and Crowe’s Cutthroats.

I wanted to filed my newly painted Gun Carriage, so it was the first model I added to my list. I’ve been having great fun with Strakov recently, so he was definitely the ‘caster I wanted to field. I rarely use him without Beast-09 and a Devastator. Sylys Wyshnalyrr is a model I’ve wanted to use as I think he is potentially great for Khadoran ‘casters, so I added him to the list (spolier alert – he was great!). The rest of the list revolved around ranged support (Widowmakers and Marksman) and some melee punch (Great Bears, IFP and Shocktroopers). Reinholdt was added as I had a point to spare. Here’s a full rundown of my list -

System: Warmachine
Faction: Khador
Casters: 1/1
Points: 50/50

Kommander Strakhov (*6pts)
* Beast-09 (11pts)
* Devastator (9pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Gun Carriage (9pts)
Battle Mechaniks (Leader and 3 Grunts) (2pts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood (5pts)
Iron Fang Pikemen (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
Man-o-war Shocktroopers (Leader and 2 Grunts) (6pts)
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (4pts)
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (proxied by Oridic Pistolier)(1pts)
Widowmaker Marksman (2pts)

We played the Incursion scenario (three flags; one randomly disappears at the end of second round; first player to three control points wins) from the SR2012 Beta, though it hasn’t changed much from its previous incarnation.

Anthony had the first turn and pushed up aggressively. Scaverous moved up through a wood with a Skarlock and Malice close by. In the centre the Banes moved up quickly with the Biles behind them. On the right Crowe’s moved up. On each flank a contingent of Warwitch Siren, Ripjaw and Pistolwraith moved forward.

In response I pushed my whole force up. Strakhov put Sentry onto the Gun Carriage and Superiority onto Beast-09. The battle engine pushed trampled forward and took out of range shots towards Crowe’s and the Banes. I killed one Cutthroat. Beast-09 and the IFP moved up my left flank (opposite Scaverous) and the Great Bears moved up the right (opposite Crowe’s). The Devastator trundled forward and the Widowmakers camped out in a wood.

Anthony attempted destroy Beast-09 through Telekensis-ing Malice and Beast-09 and then dragging Beast into contact with it. The plan was to serve Beast up to the Banes. Bad dice foiled the plan, dooming Malice on my next turn. On the right Crowe’s Cutthroats were ineffective against the Great Bears (a theme that would mostly continue). My Gun Carriage moved up to contest a flag in the centre, killing a Bane and blasting Biles apart while Beast-09 decimated Malice. The Shocktroopers and IFP beat up the Ripjaw on the left while the Great Bears went to town on Crowe’s. I managed to pick up a control point in the centre.

In response the Banes tore Beast-09 apart and a single Bile Thrall managed to purge, killing two IFP, three Mechaniks and my Reinholdt proxy. At this stage the attrition was starting to mount! With a bit of effort I managed to clear enough Banes to score another control point in the middle. This involved effectively sacrificing the Devastator. Scaverous had moved forward and tore it apart while the Banes took the Gun Carriage down. On the final Great Bear died to a Ripjaw, scoring Anthony a control point.

Strakhov has a fun spell, Battering Ram, but I rarely getto cast it. As Anthony only had one model contesting each of the two control points I had an opportunity to score on either. I used Strakhov to push the Ripjaw 3″ back (on my second attempt after rolling three 1′s). The Widowmakers then ran in for the scenario win.

Closing Thoughts
The Gun Carriage performed very well. It takes a bit of getting used to as the trampling and charging are the best ways to get it moving. This requires giving it a little space. The rough terrain areas left by the cannons are pretty useful, but the best element of the Gun Carriage is how formidable it is. A few Widowmaker shots can clear out an area for the Gun Carriage to trample to, thus making it a pretty scary spectre. I look forward to fielding it again.

Until next time,

Myself and Phil got a 50pts 4 hour(!) game in on VASSAL last night. We played the scenario for the Hordes: Domination release event (PDF) (which Phil kindly did up a map for). If you flick through the images above, you’ll get a good sense of what happened. I managed to drop some damage at range on to Baldur and I kept Kallus well back until the endgame. Scenario points are scored for having Warbeasts/Warjacks or Warcaster/Warlock is on your opponents side of the board.

This was a very high attrition game with very little from either force surviving the game. Phil looked to be in a pretty solid position about half way through the game with his wall of Wolds advancing up the middle and making good use of the boulders. He narrowly failed to kill my Carnivean with Megalith (thanks to Spiny Growth) and that was probably the turning point in the game. The Carnivean had no problem dismantling the character Wold. Then things were a little more even. It went on to take out another Wold and the final one was carved up by the Ravagore (which was killed) and Kallus. I needed to make each of these kills to deny Phil scenario points. With the heavy damage from early game on him (and being on fire!) Baldur was up against it. The deathblow came from a Raptor’s arrow. Quite fitting as they served me very well this game, killing things at range and then acting as a speedbump. The unit leader was the only Raptor to survive, but he held his nerve and made the shot that counted.

It was a good game and a really fun scenario. If you get a chance download it and give it a go.

Until next time,

Owen

Tonight’s Flames of War game against Peter was great fun. We played the Cauldron scenario with my fortified Hoch und Deutschmeister force defending. I started the game with lots of barbed wire sections, some HMG nests, a Panzer II turret, a platoon of Panzerknacker Rifle/MG troops and my company commander. I kept my three Panzer IV Hs in ambush and the rest of my force (two Rifle/MG platoons, Mortars and Nebelwerfers) were in delayed reserve.

Peter had three platoons start the game, mostly on my right flank – five Stuarts, Pioneers and Riflemen.

The game started with my tanks taking out a Stuart and bailing another. Then I managed to cause heavy losses to the Rifle platoon. Pretty good going. I took pot shots at the dug in and gone to ground Pioneers with my main guns on the Panzers. This offered a side shot to the Stuarts who bailed two and caused the other to break! Things were suddenly looking bleak…

I managed to hold off for a while, but the Stuarts were able to rampage through my army unchecked.

It was a really fun game and finishes out our Infantry Aces campaign (kind of ironic that the tanks had such a strong role in the final game!). It’s been great fun, though both mine and Peter’s Aces were destroyed in this game. I think I’ll dig out my notes on the Hürtgen Forest campaign and prepare something for a few months time.

Until next time,

Owen

I felt a little bad for Conor when I pulled the trigger on the assassination. He was already a little disillusioned after Deneghra’s feat turn. Denny managed to get Crippling Grasp on to him from about 19″ away (thanks to a Defiler that ran into arcing range). Tartarus then finished off the Sword Knights creating three Bane Knights who had a charge angle on the enemy warcaster. A lone Thrall and a load of Knights charged Siege Brisbane (who was on -2 DEF and -4 ARM). I felt dirty.

It was a fun game, though I’m not sure Conor would review it that way!

I will be running a 35 Point Warmachine/Hordes Tournament on Saturday, 10th December in Gamer’s World Dublin. Full details are:

What: Steamroller 2012 Beta Tournament
Where: Gamers World, Dublin
Date & Time: 10/12/2011. 11am hard start, registration begins at 10:15 AM.
Entry Fee: €10.
Points: 35 points, two lists (optional). Lists must be written. If taking a theme force, players are required to bring a copy of the theme rules. Note: Reinforcements will not be used in this tournament.
Restrictions: Models or Units with FA:C cannot be in both lists. For the purpose of regular versus epics, epic models are considered to be different characters than their regular versions.
Timing: 10 minute timed turns (standard for 35pts is 7 minute timed turns, but I’m relaxing it for this one)
Tie-breakers: For the tournament, if there is no outright winner, Control Points will be tiebreaker. Second tiebreaker will be Army Points.
Scenarios:“Gauntlet”, “Destruction”, “Outflank, Outfight, Outlast”, “A Flag Too Far”, “Restoration”, “Command and Control”. The scenario for each round will be randomly chosen from the list above. Each scenario may only be used once. NOTE: The ‘Reinforcements’ artifice will not be used.

Prizes will include best general, 2nd place and a few spot prizes.

See you all there.

Owen

Peter and I are four games into our Infantry Aces campaign. Infantry Aces is an escalating campaign with three games played at 500, 700 and 900 points levels. So far we’ve played the three 500pt games and a 700pt game. Honours are pretty even with both of us going different routes for our Ace’s advancement. I’ve gone with leadership advances as the Hoch und Deutschmeister are only Confident/Trained. Peter has gone the tactics route, specifically the ability to call in some artillery support.

In the third game, set in a small village on the outskirts of Cassino, I ended up defending with a single objective on the hill amongst the buildings. It was a modified Cauldron scenario. I set up one platoon of Reichsgrenadiers (Rifle/MG) in the village and held another in ambush. As Peter’s rifle platoon approached the village I deployed the ambush and assaulted them driving them back, but not breaking them. Another of Peter’s platoons came on in reserve and my ambushing platoon again assaulted. This time my platoon was destroyed, but the Americans took a good few casualties. Peter tried one assault into the town, but decided without any way to pin my MG/Rifle platoons continuing would have been too costly and conceded.

For our fourth game we jumped to 700pts and I added some fortifications to my army – two MG nests, a Panzer II turret and five sections (40″) of barbed wire. We played on the same terrain as this time the scenario was No Retreat. I set up my fortifications before the objectives are placed. I did a pretty good job in placing them, but that was more luck than skill. This game played out in a very similar manner to the last. My ambushing platoon popped up in the village and slowed Peter’s progress. I got all of my reserve platoons early and was able to fend off the pioneers that moved up my left flank. Peter wasn’t tempted to assault my line and I wasn’t keen to move out of my fortified position. Another stalemate.

I’ll ditch the fortifications for the next game in favour of some more open play. I think both of our Aces can take advancements again – I’ll stick with the leadership track.

Until next time,

Owen

In a recent game against Anthony’s Trollbloods the centre of the battlefield was a mass of Legionnaires, Blighted Ogryn and Fennblades. These guys, however didn’t do the heavy lifting. There were three stars of the game, which was played using the Incursion scenario.

#3 The Shepherd that scored two control points on the right flank. Nothing particularly impressive about that – she had nothing better to do after the Ravagore was decimated (more on that below).

#2 The Swamp Gobbers who blocked a charge lane from eMadrak to Kallus and survived 9 missed attacks to effectively win the game for me. DEF 15 is pretty sweet!

#1 The shining stars of the game were the Pygmy Burrowers. Anthony dug them in on turn 1. When they popped up eMadrak put Blood Fury on them and then something amazing happened. There was a Carnivean with its animus up and a Ravagore in charge range, so four Digmys charged into each and showed what an extra damage dice can do! Both beasts were totalled. Later on they managed to put a load of damage on Kallus too. Not enough to win the game, but more than I expected. At 6 points they are severely undercosted!

The game went to me on scenario, but I only had four models on the board at the end of the game! It was the narrowest of wins.

Until next time,

The shop is located just off Main St. near Equestrian World (just on the left from this Street View). The shop also has its own Facebook page, so check it out. They have two 4′x8′ tables, so enough room for four Warmachine/Hordes games at a time. There is also a small painting area for those looking to get some miniatures ready for the tabletop.

They are running a Warmachine/Hordes slow grow league at the moment, so now is a great time to share a 2-player battlebox with a friend and start playing!
