Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2012 brings you joy and peace. I’ve had another good year on the blog. I’ve written 98 posts this year, down a bit from last year. Not bad considering little Ciarán arrived in May!

My main focus in 2011 was campaign play and I see that continuing in 2011. I’ve played campaigns in Warmachine, Horde and Flames of War. I’ve also done quite a bit of painting this year. Here are a few samples -

I didn’t make that much terrain last year. I made the Jailhouse, some Fences and some fortifications for Flames of War. I’d like to improve on that for next year.

I also did the Wargames Audit which was a great exercise. On the back of it I am determined to concentrate on my three core games of Warmachine/Hordes, Flames of War and Malifaux in 2012. I don’t see myself starting any new armies other than adding to my US WWII army. I have good faction coverage in Warmachine (Khador, Mercs and Cryx) and Hordes (Legion) and until I get more games of Malifaux played there is no point adding more models. I have the Puppet Wars models and the Dead Justice crew to paint anyway. My painting list is under control and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made.

In 2012 I’m looking forward to extending the Malifaux VASSAL module and getting more Malifaux played. I’d also like to run a Flames of War campaign based on some of the fighting in the Hürtgen Forest. I’m going to focus my Press Ganger activity on a new store that opened in my home town recently. I think the IK RPG may pique my interest in 2011 too, but I’m not really a roleplayer!

Happy New Year,

Owen

We have a new wargames shop here in Maynooth called Gamers Hub. It opened a couple of weeks ago and stocks Privateer Press (Warmachine and Hordes), Games Workshop (Warhammer, 40k, etc.), CCG (Magic The Gathering and all that nonsense!), board games and plenty of other things. Ethan, the store owner, can order in anything you need, so just let him know what you want.

The shop is located just off Main St. near Equestrian World (just on the left from this Street View). The shop also has its own Facebook page, so check it out. They have two 4′x8′ tables, so enough room for four Warmachine/Hordes games at a time. There is also a small painting area for those looking to get some miniatures ready for the tabletop.

They are running a Warmachine/Hordes slow grow league at the moment, so now is a great time to share a 2-player battlebox with a friend and start playing!

When I was in Hamburg last month the only ‘wargame’ Phil and I played was Memoir ’44. We used to play it a bit before he moved to Germany. If you haven’t played it it’s a fun boardgame that plays quickly and offers a variety of missions that set Allied and Axis forces against each other in different theatres (Normandy in the basic box; Eastern front, Africa, Pacific in expansions etc.). Phil and I play a game on VASSAL most weeks, but this week rather than playing Warmachine we decided to play some Memoir.

The basic idea behind M’44 is that each player has a hand of cards where each card allows you to activate a few units on the left flank, right flank or in the middle. Units are comprised of 3-4 models and when they battle (using special dice) a model in a target unit is removed if its symbol appears on the dice. Range and terrain affect the number of dice rolled. After a card is played it is discarded and a new one is drawn from the deck. Simple stuff and it translates very well to VASSAL.

In the VASSAL module, each player has an area to store their hand of cards and can drop a card onto the discard pile to play it. It then becomes visible to your opponent. Units are easy to move and there are shortcuts to remove wounded models (Ctrl-H), indicate that a unit is being ordered (Ctrl-O) and whatever else you might need to do.

Memoir is typically won by destroying a certain number of enemy units (moved to your victory bar) or seizing specific objectives. I was playing the Allies in the game above and managed to destroy six units before Phil did. I had ridiculously good cards! We played the game in less than an hour and a half and that was a relatively long game for Memoir.

The nice thing about Memoir ’44 is that there are a lot of missions set in many different WWII theatres, so it has high replay value.

Here are the rules (PDF) and here you can get the VASSAL modules. Go check it out…

Ok – I’ve stopped hating these guys enough to write a short painting guide. They are easy to paint, but there is a lot of fine detail that needs to be painted, so they are quite time consuming to complete. I’ll do this area by area as it is more or less how I painted them. The areas are in the order I tackled them -

Armour As red is the predominant colour and the miniatures are already moulded in red plastic I decided not to spray undercoat them. Instead I grab the GW Tank brush (the really big one) and the Foundation Mecrite Red and undercoated them the slow way. I was careful not to put too much paint on the brush as it would be really easy to obscure the detail. Next I drybrushed the miniatures (in downward strokes) with GW Blood Red. This was followed by a lighter drybrush of P3 Khador Red Highlight (an orange colour). I washed the whole miniature in the miracle wash (1:1 Badab Black and Devlan Mud).

Eyes, Purity Seals and Crux The eyes were painted Foundation Knarloc Green using my smallest brush. The purity seals parchment was based in GW Bestial Brown, then painted with GW Kommando Khaki and highlighted with GW Bleached Bone. The seal was painted with GW Gore Red and washed with the miracle wash. The Crux was based in GW Codex Grey, washed in Badab Black and then highlighted (very lightly) with GW Fortress Grey.

Pipes, Sensor Lights and Gems The pipes were painted GW Shadow Grey or GW Fortress Grey. The sensor lights are based in GW Enchanted Blue and dotted with GW Ice Blue. The gems are Foundation Hormagaunt Purple, then dotted with a 1:1 mix of this colour and GW Skull White.

Metals By this point I was well and truly sick of these miniatures. They are gorgeous sculpts, the the superfluous detail is over the top. Anyway, the grey metal is watered down GW Boltgun Metal applied over a GW Chaos Black Base and then washed with the miracle wash. The gold metal is a 1:1 mix of P3 Brass Balls (a light brass colour) and GW Shining Gold. It was then washed with GW Brown Ink.

I painted the shoulder pads ‘half and half’ on some miniatures using GW Chaos Black and GW Skull White. The black areas were highlighted with GW Codex Grey. Finally I painted the base GW Chaos Black. Phew! Six down, seven (including the dead marine) to go.

I picked up my copy of the new edition of Space Hulk on Friday. I have the original game and both expansions, but as soon as its release date was confirmed I put in my pre-order with my FLGS. It is an excellent game with an amazing sense of tension. I played a demo game on Friday of the first ‘Suicide Mission’, which is lifted directly from the original. I somehow managed to complete the mission and have all five terminators alive at the end!

Anyway, I started painting the Blood Angel Space Marine Terminators last night. I’ll post a painting guide when I’m finished, but here is the work done so far.

I have the metallics and the bases left to do, which will take a while as there is a lot of metal to do. Painting these miniatures has reminded me why I never got into Warhammer 40k (despite playing Epic, Inquisitor and BFG!). All the extraneous Gothic detailing on the armour pisses me off! Don’t get me wrong, these are the best plastics I have ever seen, but there is too much fiddly detail to paint. That’s got more to do with the 40k fluff than the sculpting. The terminators are walking shrines, relics of everything their chapter has achieved. I get it, but I don’t like the Gothic aesthetic and its associated clutter.

I will persevere. Space Hulk is such a great game that it deserves to be fully painted and with these six finished (soon) I’ll have half of the marines painted.
